SERAMBI
The design narrative was greatly inspired by serambi; a longitudinal space attached to the rumah ibu (main house), particularly for the Negeri Sembilan Malays in Rembau. It emphasizes as the ‘face’ of the house which gives attention aesthetically with beautiful embellishments, usually in the form of decorative woodcarvings. Two significant sociocultural values are inculcated within the design; 1) The positioning of the main entrance, 2) The sequencing of future extension for serambi space.
A Sense of Place
The architectural language creates valuable impacts in term of sustainable aspects including building design and social activities to evoke comfort and warmth. Serambi also gives a good visual contact and acts as a welcoming element. The semi-open space and plants will enhance the natural air flow, which will provide the space with ample sunlight penetration as well as comfortable acoustic levels. Serambi desires to embody a functional space design which contains substantial influence on the quality of life of people.
